The family of an elderly couple murdered in a home invasion 21 years ago say it will now be up to probation officers to monitor one of the murderers when he's released from prison next month.
Jock Jamieson is the husband of Margaret whose parents Josie and John were shot in their Waikato home in 1994.
Leith Rex Ray, 40, has spent more than half his life in prison for the murders.
According to a Parole Board decision released to the media today, Ray has undergone drug treatment and seen a psychologist.
He has also had home leave and had the support of his family.
The board found he no longer posed an undue risk to the community.
The Parole Board's decision was no suprise to Mr Jamieson.
He said a curfew and electronic monitoring were good conditions but it is a heavy weight to bare for probation officers.
Ray would be subjected to conditions including a curfew and electronic monitoring.
His co-offender Gresham Marsh is due back before the Parole Board in August.
Media reports from the time of the murder show Ray and his co-offender Marsh stole a rifle before breaking into the Harrison's home and shooting them dead.
