Ashburton algae no longer toxic

3:50 pm on 20 March 2015

The Ashburton District Council says an algae in part of Ashburton River is no longer at toxic levels.

In December, testing near the Ashburton River bridge on State Highway One found increased levels of cyanobacteria.

The council said latest testing showed the algae was below the alert level.

It said the area was now safe for dogs, but the water quality was still not suitable for people swimming.
