Police chases and a ram raid in Auckland

10:00 am on 16 March 2015

Police officers in Auckland foiled an attempted robbery this morning, when a stolen car was crashed into a shoe-shop.

Officers were patrolling in the Newmarket area and saw the stolen subaru being smashed into the front of The Footlocker store at 5.30am.

A second car fled the scene and police started to follow it at high speed, but the pursuit was abandoned after two minutes.

Another stolen vehicle the police believe was connected to the ram raid was found crashed into a tree in Newmarket a short while later.

The police are appealing for any information about the robbery.

High speed chase

The police in Auckland are looking for several people in relation to a crime spree and dramatic high speed chase overnight.

They said shortly before midnight they went to investigate an attempted burglary and car tampering, and saw four vehicles driving at excessive speeds in convoy.

Police said the cars drove onto the motorway heading south, reaching speeds of up to 110 kilometres an hour in very wet conditions.

The police said the chase was abandoned as it became too dangerous, but later two of the four cars lost control and collided with a median barrier.

The occupants fled.

The other two cars sped off and one was found in the suburb of Clendon.

The police say some of those they are looking for are believed to be as young as 15. They did not say where the chase began.
