A man who drove into a crowd of people at a Hokianga wedding at the weekend is likely to face prosecution.

Kaikohe police say the 20-year-old local man was drinking at Omapere's Copthorne hotel at 4am on Sunday, when he got into an argument with some of wedding guests.

Senior Sergeant Brian Swann said after the groom and others intervened; the man - who was not a wedding guest - agreed to accept a ride home, then got behind the wheel himself and drove into a group of guests.

Mr Swann says the man was driving slowly and it's not clear that he meant to hit anyone, but three people including the groom suffered bruising.
