Police in Hamilton say a search of the Waikato River continues for a man who disappeared while trying to swim across it.

They said he slipped below the surface as another man tried to save him near Jellicoe Drive.

The 22-year-old is presumed drowned.

Emergency services were called just before 9pm yesterday after friends raised the alarm.

Searchers used thermal imaging equipment to try to find him.

Police said it was a tragedy for the man's family who had been enjoying some recreation time.

Meanwhile, a man is in a critical condition in Auckland Hospital after nearly drowning at a small beach in the inner city suburb of Herne Bay.

St John Ambulance were called to Cremorne Reserve just after 2pm today.
