The main trunk line near Wellington has re-opened to freight services after a maintenance machine caught fire in a tunnel near Kaiwharawhara earlier today.
A KiwiRail spokesperson said three staff were in the vehicle at the time but they were able to escape uninjured and raise the alarm.
An inspection has found no damage to the tunnel or the track, and some signal cable damage will be repaired tomorrow.
Both KiwiRail and the Fire Service will be investigating the cause of the fire.
