1:59 pm on 16 January 2015

Another coastal search is being carried out for a man who was swept away in rough seas near Bethells Beach.

About 30 of the man's family members are gathered at O'Neills Bay.

The 23-year old man got into trouble at O'Neills Bay about 3.30pm yesterday. The beach is not patrolled and surf lifeguards were alerted by a 111 call.

Lifesavers in rescue boats from Bethells Beach and Piha scoured the area, along with the Westpac Rescue and police helicopters.

The search was called off after two hours and resumed early today.

Surf Life Saving Northern Region manager David Butt said an extensive search has been carried out today and the police helicopter was sweeping the shoreline this afternoon.
