A shallow earthquake has shaken Christchurch tonight.

The 4.0 magnitude rumble was 13 km deep, and centred 10 km out of the city, near Taylors Mistake beach.
GeoNet described the quake as moderate.
St John Ambulance communications advisor Ian Henderson said they had no reports of injuries and no calls relating to the shake.
But he said it was a good reminder for people to have an emergency kit ready just in case.
