Traffic was backed up for more than 1km on State Highway 1 in Marlborough on Tuesday as firefighters battled a blaze near the railway tracks in Seddon.
The fire started near the south side of the Seddon overbridge just after 11am.
Police said trains have been stopped because of the fire's close proximity to the tracks and the road was closed for a short time, but both have been re-opened.
