Two children badly hurt in a car fire in Gisborne on Thursday afternoon remain in a critical condition.

Police are yet to determine the cause of the blaze and are waiting to speak to the children's mother.

Manaia Namana-Rowe, aged three years, is in the intensive care unit at Middlemore hospital after undergoing surgery on Friday night.

Her brother Rious, aged 22 months, is in Waikato hospital. He is in a critical, but stable condition.

The fire started after the children were left alone in the car while their mother went into a shop.

Police on Friday found a lighter in the back seat of the car, but cannot say whether it started the fire.

They are yet to interview the children's mother, who is with her son at Waikato hospital.

The hospital said she has thanked rescuers who pulled her children from the blaze and emergency services for their quick response.
