Legislation reforming criminal trials has progressed further through the House.
The Criminal Procedures Bill passed its second reading in Parliament on Tuesday, with only the Greens, Mana and independent MP Chris Carter opposed.
Justice Minister Simon Power has accepted all of the recommended changes from the select committee that considered the bill and introduced further changes after negotiations with Labour, the Maori Party and ACT.
Mr Power told the House he is confident the additional changes will strike a balance between time and cost savings and a defendant's right to a fair trial.
The legislation will not come back before the House for its final stages until after the November election.
