New party targets Asian vote in Botany

A new political party is looking to corner the Asian vote in the Botany by-election next month.

The seat was vacated by National MP Pansy Wong after questions were raised about her parliamentary travel expenditure.

At last count, 23% of Botany's population identified themselves as Asian, with many concerned Mrs Wong's departure would rob them of their political voice.

The New Citizen's Party, which is just two months old and led by businessman Paul Young, wants to ensure that does not happen.

Mr Young says the electorate is ethnically diverse and must be well-represented.

Meanwhile the National Party held its official campaign launch on Thursday night for its candidate Jami-Lee Ross.
