The Labour Minister Simon Bridges says the forestry industry is not safe enough but it will be months before new regulations to better protect workers come into force.

The families of forestry workers killed at work are urging the government to regulate the industry, saying too many people are hurt and killed.

A memorial service was held on Sunday in Wellington to honour the 32 forestry workers who have died on the job since 2008, and a silent procession to Parliament in memory of those workers was due to place at midday on Monday.

Mr Bridges says the health and safety reform bill will come into force in April next year and a code of conduct for forestry safety is under urgent review.
