A member of the public-sector union says changing the law to limit the redundancy options for state employees is discriminatory.
Parliament's finance and expenditure select committee is hearing submissions on proposed reform of the State Sector Act.
The bill would ensure public sector employees do not receive redundancy if - while still in their jobs - they get another in the state sector that has similar duties, with terms and conditions no less favourable.
But a member of the Public Service Association, Justice Ministry employee Sonja Mitchell, says it's unfair and not the employment agreement she signed up for in good faith.
She told MPs the change would mean the public service losing skilled workers who would go to work in the private sector or overseas.
