Maungatautari Reserve dispute settled

4:59 pm on 18 October 2011

A dispute over the governance of Maungatautari Reserve in the Waikato region has been settled a year after it began.

The 3400-hectare reserve protects species such as Kiwi, Hihi and Takahe behind a 47km fence.

Co-chair of the Maungatautari Ecological Island Trust Tony Wilding says Maori felt their representation was not a partnership.

He says that view was criticised by landowners involved who locked their gates leading to the enclosure.

Mr Wilding says iwi, landowners and the community have now been through mediation and have found a way forward.
