A camera trial at 10 Auckland intersections has seen a marked drop in motorists driving though red lights.
Auckland Transport says two cameras were rotated over three years between the intersections which had a history of crashes caused by motorists running red lights.
More than 9000 $150 tickets were handed out for offences.
Spokesperson Karen Hay says there was a 43% reduction in red light-running at the camera sites and a 69% decrease in crashes. The measures also led to a 32% reduction in rear-end crashes.
The Government will now evaluate whether red light cameras should be installed elsewhere.
The Automobile Association says it wants the cameras installed in all major cities.
The cameras will remain in use in Auckland while a national policy is developed.
