Three people were arrested on Thursday following a series of search warrants targeting traffic offending and antisocial trail bike use in Ōpōtiki.

Antisocial behaviour on trail or dirt bikes has been reported across the country this year.

In July, Rotorua police said they planned a crackdown on illegal dirt bike riders, with a senior officer warning it could be only a matter of time before someone was killed in the city.

Illegal dirt bike riders had also recently been terrifying livestock and damaging newly planted native trees in Porirua.

Police said they executed four search warrants earlier on Thursday morning at properties in the Ōpōtiki area.

"One trail bike was located and impounded, and two young people were arrested at the scene."

They were both referred to Youth Court.

Following the search warrants, another property of interest was searched under warrantless power.

Police said they located and seized cannabis, cash and one trail bike and took a 25-year-old man into custody.

He was due to appear in court at a later date charged with traffic offending and drug-related charges.

In a statement, police said they wanted the public's help in stopping illegal and antisocial trail and dirt bike use.

"Ōpōtiki Police remain committed to holding those to account for this unlawful activity, and urge the community to come forward with any information around unlawful dirt bike use.

"Information like this helps us identify and locate alleged offenders and seize bikes for the safety of everyone on the roads or out and about."
