A sesame paste sold in a few ethnic supermarkets in Auckland, Hamilton and Wellington has been recalled due to the possible presence of salmonella.

Aldiery's Mediterranean Market is urging anyone who has bought Durra brand tahina to return it for a refund, or throw it out.

Tahina in an 800g jar with a best-before date of 6 April, 2027 is affected, as is any with a batch marking of 'Lot No. 78'.

"Salmonellosis can be serious, so it's important that people do not eat the affected product," New Zealand Food Safety deputy director-general Vincent Arbuckle said.

"You can return it to the place of purchase for a refund. If that's not possible, throw it out."

The product, imported from Jordan, was sold at:

  • Quandhari Bazaar - 1 Saint Jude Road, Avondale, Auckland
  • Lotus Supermarket Stoddard Road - 64 Stoddard Road, Wesley, Auckland
  • Hesari Supermarket - Queens Road - 56 Queens Road, Auckland
  • Alkarama Market - 977 Heaphy Terrace, Fairfield, Hamilton
  • Kiwi Halal Meats - 286 High Street, Hutt Central, Lower Hutt

"Symptoms of salmonellosis can appear within 12 to 72 hours and include abdominal cramps, diarrhoea, fever, headache, nausea and vomiting," Arbuckle said. "Illness usually lasts between four and seven days but, in more severe cases, it can go on for up to 10 days and cause more serious illness."

Call Healthline on 0800 611 116 or get in touch with your doctor if you have eaten some and had concerns.

The same product was recalled in 2023 for similar reasons.

"As is our usual practice, New Zealand Food Safety will work with Aldiery's Mediterranean Market Limited to understand how this happened and prevent its recurrence," Arbuckle said.
