Primary and intermediate schools in Dunedin are starting late on Wednesday morning due to a heavy frost and black ice around the city.
The Dunedin City Council asked residents to take care on roads and footpaths, especially in shaded areas.
Contractors were applying grit on main roads as it was required.
The Otago Primary Principals Association said all primary and intermediate schools, and DKA Dunedin Kindergartens between Mosgiel, Port Chalmers and Waikouaiti were starting at 10am due to the weather.
The suburb of Waverley was reported to be particularly icy.
The late start did not apply to year seven and eight students in colleges.
