Police say a person has died, after a serious crash that downed powerlines and closed a major Marlborough highway.
Emergency services were called to the single vehicle crash on State Highway 6, near Okaramio, south of Havelock, about 6pm Saturday.
"Powerlines have been brought down, obstructing the road," police said.
Shortly before 8pm, police said one person had died in the crash and the road remained closed, while the Serious Crash Unit investigated.
The highway was closed between Leslies Road and Mount Riley Road, and was expected to be closed for some time.
"Motorists should continue to avoid the area if possible."
