Pre-Matariki chaos has already hit Auckland roads, after a police stand-off closed multiple central streets.
A man has since been arrested and taken into police custody.
RNZ understands nearby schools did not need to go into lockdown.
About a dozen White Swan Road residents, including parents with children who had just finished school, were not allowed to enter the cordoned off areas to get home. Buses were diverted to avoid the incident.
All cordons in the area have since been lifted but delays are still to be expected.
An intersection of State highway 1B and Holland Road near Hamilton is closed due to realignment work. The intersection is expected to reopen at the end of June.
Heading into the Matariki weekend, police said there would be no tolerance for unsafe driving.
"There was an unacceptable number of road deaths over King's Birthday weekend, and we don't want a repeat of that this weekend," director of road policing, Superintendent Steve Greally said.
"If you are driving in a way that puts your own or someone else's safety at risk, expect there to be consequences."
Over the recent Kings Birthday weekend five people were killed and at least 10 were injured in separate crashes.
Police said there would be more officers out on the countries roads "with the clear intention to stop and prevent unsafe driving behaviour, day and night".
"Matariki is a time for families to come together and be with each other - please don't do anything which would prevent that from happening," Greally said.
