Staff revived men found unconscious at bottom of Newmarket swimming pool

Two men who got into trouble in the water at an Auckland pool on Saturday night had to be resuscitated by staff and pool visitors..

Emergency services were called to the Olympic Pools and Fitness Centre in Newmarket at 7.30pm.

A witness old Newshub he noticed two men in their 20s or 30s at the bottom of a pool at the Olympic Pools and Fitness Centre. He dove down to check on them and saw that they were unconscious.

Pool director Peter Rust said staff - with the assistance of some pool users, one of who was a doctor - resuscitated the pair, who were taken to hospital in a critical condition.

"We have received no update about their condition," he said on Sunday morning.

"The management and staff of The Olympic offer our deepest sympathies to the family of the two men and hope they recover fully.

"Olympic staff carried out their usual lifeguarding duties throughout the day and immediately before this incident. They responded immediately to the situation and followed prescribed emergency procedures fully. We sincerely thank the members of the public who assisted them with this rescue."
