Two people have been critically injured after what St John Ambulance is describing as a water-related incident in the Auckland suburb of Newmarket.

Ambulances were called to Broadway at 7.30pm, and two people were taken to Auckland City Hospital.

A witness told Newshub that he noticed two men in their 20s or 30s at the bottom of a pool at the Olympic Pools and Fitness Centre.

He dove down to check on them and saw that they were unconscious.

The men were pulled from the pool and lifeguards performed CPR, the witness told Newshub.

Police have been contacted for comment.
