A heavy rain watch is in place for parts of the country overnight and into Sunday.

A low pressure system is approaching from the northwest and is moving across northern New Zealand during the weekend, while slowly weakening, MetService said.

Rain is expected to affect many parts of the North Island, it said.

There is a heavy rain watch for the Coromandel peninsula from 11pm Saturday to 4pm Sunday, and for the Bay of Plenty west of Whakatāne from 2am Sunday to 8pm Sunday.

Rainfall amounts may approach warning criteria, especially about the ranges, and thunderstorms are possible.

A heavy rain watch is also in place for the Taranaki region from 8pm tonight through to 2am Monday morning, MetService said.
