Police are asking for the public's help to find a missing fisherman in South Canterbury.

The Timaru man failed to return from a fishing trip to the Opihi River last Thursday.

A police spokesperson said several related items had been found around the rivermouth, but active search efforts were being scaled back.

People are still asked to report sightings of a green plastic dinghy, a grey or blue tarpaulin, a blue and white T-shirt and blue shorts to police.

They said the items may be spotted as far north as Te Waihora Lake Ellesmere, near Christchurch, roughly 150km away.
