A Royal New Zealand Hercules has been forced to make an emergency landing at Auckland's Whenuapai air base this morning.

The New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) said in a statement that the Air Force C-130H Hercules was departing on an operation from the Whenuapai air base, when a crew member shut down one engine in response to a fire warning light.

NZDF said the aircraft landed at 9.17am without incident and no fire was found onboard.

It said Fire and Emergency had been notified as per standard procedure.

NZDF confirmed that the crew member followed proper procedures.

An investigation would be carried out.
