Police have revealed the names of a missing boy and his mother who died after a boat capsized in Manukau Harbour earlier this month.

Five people were on board a vessel when it overturned off Clark's Beach on 6 November.

In a statement, police said the woman who died in the incident was 39-year-old Gemma Ferregel.

The boy who is still missing is her 10-year-old son Ryder Ferregel.

Police released a statement on the behalf of their family: "We're all devastated and lost for words while we grieve for Gemma and Ryder. Our only wish now is that Ryder is brought home as soon as possible.

"We would like to express our thanks to the emergency services and volunteers in the community who have contributed to the search."

Police said the incident would be referred to the coroner.
