Covid-19 update: 1653 new community cases, 254 in hospital

There are 1653 new community cases of Covid-19 in New Zealand today.

In a statement, the Ministry of Health said there were 254 people in hospital with the virus, including 7 in ICU.

The ministry said the seven-day rolling average of community case numbers today was 1595. Last Thursday, it was 2023.

And the seven-day rolling average of hospitalisations today is 259.

In the past seven days there have been an average of five deaths confirmed each day as being attributable to Covid-19, the ministry said.

There are now a total of 1941 deaths confirmed as attributable to Covid-19, either as the underlying cause of death or as a contributing factor.

Yesterday saw 1793 community cases reported as Ministry of Health Deputy Director-General Dr Andrew Old told media there was "real and sustained evidence" that Covid-19 was declining in the community.
