More than 450 bed nights have been cancelled on the Abel Tasman Coast Track after heavy rainfall caused damage and forced its closure in parts.

Parts of the Great Walk have since reopened after work was done to clear slips and repair damage to the track.

Department of Conservation Motueka operations manager Mark Townsend said people with bookings in the closed sections of the track were given the option to cancel and be refunded.

Between August 18 to 30, 463 booked bed-nights were cancelled.

The top half of the track from Onetahuti to Wainui is now open for walkers but remains closed between Coquille Bay and Onetahuti.

However huts and campsites that can be accessed by kayak or boat are open for use.

Closed sections of the track will open progressively as further repairs are carried out.

People should check the Abel Tasman Coast Track page on the DoC website for up to date information on open and closed sections of the track.
