In its daily update, the ministry said the seven-day rolling average of community case numbers is 8335.

There were also 822 people in hospital with the virus, including 24 in intensive care or a HDU unit. That compares with 836 people, including 27 in ICU yesterday.

The ministry said there were now a total of 1396 deaths confirmed as attributable to Covid-19, either as the underlying cause of death or as a contributing factor.

In the past seven days there have been an average of 17 deaths confirmed each day.

The ministry has today clarified how many people in New Zealand have died from Covid-19.

It said the total of 1396 released today related to deaths attributable to the virus.

This figure is different to the number of deaths for people with Covid-19, which stands at 2039.

In recent times the ministry has reported this figure, before today adding the direct number of deaths because of Covid-19.

There were also 430 new Covid-19 cases at the border.

Yesterday, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said due to pressures on the health system, there was no intention to move away from the orange light setting.

She said there was another review of the settings and their specific details coming up in August.
