They have been holding pro-choice placards outside the embassy in Thorndon.

The Republican-dominated US court last week overturned the Roe v Wade ruling, which protected a constitutional right to abortion.

Organiser Madeleine Petersen-Gould told RNZ the turnout had left her "almost in tears".

"I'm hurt, I'm angry, as soon as I heard the law might be overturned about a month ago I organised this protest because I knew it was going to happen. I'm really glad I did because we had an amazing turnout.

"It's so raw and it's so heartfelt and it's such a touchy subject, I just think that it's so important that we all stand up - and everybody is - and I'm so proud."

No-one from the embassy spoke to the demonstrators, Petersen-Gould said.

She said New Zealanders had to "fight for their rights".

"Abortion is healthcare, simple as that."
