Fire and Emergency was alerted to the fire at 2.30am, but crews were initially unable to access it due to the terrain.

Two helicopters and three crews from Kingston, Garston and Athol returned at first light to battle the blaze.

A Fire and Emergency spokesperson said it burnt through seven hectares of scrub, but had now been contained and the crews had left the area.

The spokesperson said no structures were threatened.
