The fire broke out in Emerald Bay on Sunday afternoon and burnt through 280 hectares before it was contained.

Incident controller Jason Sarich said weather conditions would be challenging for the firefighters with a high temperature, wind and low humidity.

Early this morning, firefighters used thermal imaging to identify hotspots.

They were all in the containment zone, within a 7.1km perimeter.

Four crews - two Fire and Emergency crews and two from the Department of Conservation - were working to dampen down the hotspots before the hottest part of the day when fires could flare up, he said.

Fire investigators were trying to establish the cause of the blaze.

Aurora Energy said generators were en route to supply power to customers impacted when several power poles were burnt down.
