A 19-year-old man has been arrested after a firearms incident in Winton, Southland earlier today.
Police were called to Park Street about 1pm where it was reported that a firearm had been discharged.
A school and kindergarten in the area went into lockdown for about two hours in the afternoon as a precautionary measure while the area was cordoned off, and police and the armed offenders squad responded to the incident.
Police said a man who was found with gunshot injuries was taken to hospital. He is reported to be in a serious but stable condition.
A 19-year-old man was later arrested in Invercargill.
Police said they were not seeking anyone else in relation to the incident but inquiries were ongoing.
