Christchurch roads cordoned off after fire in historic building

12:16 pm on 5 November 2021

Residents were evacuated and roads cordoned off after a major fire in a historic Christchurch building.

The fire broke out overnight in the dilapidated Category 2 heritage Antonio Hall on Riccarton Road.

Eleven fire crews attended the blaze, which is being treated as suspicious.

The building was badly damaged in a previous fire in 2019.

People living nearby were evacuated, but have since been allowed to return to their homes, and part of Riccarton Ris closed off.

Cordons placed at the intersections of Riccarton and Wharenui roads, Wharenui Rand Peverel Street, and Riccarton and Ilam roads were lifted mid-morning.
