"Geoff has made an incredible contribution to the bank, and we're indebted to his leadership, guidance and wisdom," RBNZ Governor Adrian Orr said.

Bascand has been at the RBNZ since 2013, responsible for financial stability, including moves to revamp regulation of the banking and insurance industries.

"The bank is a special place that makes a massive contribution to New Zealanders' wellbeing." Bascand said.

"I have had extraordinary opportunities to participate in a huge range of important initiatives, and work with many wonderful colleagues, but I want to make more time for other interests in my life."

Prior to the RBNZ, Bascand was the head of Statistics New Zealand for six years. He had also worked for Treasury and the former Department of Labour, and the International Monetary Fund.
