The upper North Island is in for a wild and wet night as a large weather system moves across the region.
MetService has issued a heavy rain warning for Bay Of Plenty and Rotorua, saying up to 120 millimetres of rain could fall overnight.
The weather service says streams and rivers could rise rapidly, with surface flooding and slips possible.
Auckland, Great Barrier Island, the Coromandel Peninsula and Taranaki is also under a severe weather watch.
