More than 100 cyclists are due to take part in the inaugural National Tweed Ride in Wairarapa this afternoon.

The 10km event, featuring riders wearing British tweed clothing, will start in Greytown.

Adam Blackwell, who initiated the event, said he got the idea from a similar event in London.

He said there will be a tea dance at the end, with awards handed out for the best dressed.

"It's just fun really - I mean a lot of people have been thinking about the tweed ride for a long time and I guess people who aren't familiar with the tweed ride might find it bit of an unusual idea but really it's just a jaunt."

Blackwell said the ride is a relaxed event and he hopes to make it an annual occurrence in Wairarapa.

The ride begins at 1pm.
