In a memo sent to stakeholders last week, chief executive Shane Ellison said reducing the workforce was part of wider efforts to meet saving targets in light of Covid-19.

The pandemic caused a gaping $500m hole in Auckland Council's budget, forcing it to slash costs.

So far, 144 staff at Auckland Transport have lost their jobs since March this year.

About 100 more roles are proposed to be cut.

Ellison said many of the employees impacted would likely be offered new roles if the restructuring went ahead.

Internal consultation on the proposal is set to run to mid-October.
