A man has died after a workplace accident understood to involve machinery at an Auckland food packaging plant.
Police say emergency services were called to an address on Unity Drive in the suburb of Rosedale at 7.35pm yesterday.
RNZ can confirm the man was working at Alto Packaging's Albany site.
Initial reports indicated the person was seriously injured but the police confirmed this morning a man died.
WorkSafe says it was making initial inquiries and understood "machinery was involved".
The police said they would will release the man's name once he had been formally identified and his family had been told - which was unlikely to be today.
Eric Kjestrup, executive general manager of the Pact Group New Zealand, which owns the Alto Packaging company, said the firm was deeply shocked by the death of its valued employee, and his thoughts were with the man's family and loved ones.
He said he did not know yet how the man died and the company was co-operating fully with investigations.
Kjestrup said the company was providing support for all its staff.
Alto Packaging's website states it operates eight plastics manufacturing plants in New Zealand and four in Australia.
The firm was fined $250,000 last year for a 2017 incident where a worker needed to have two fingertips amputated after they were caught in machinery.
WorkSafe said at the time the company had an "alarming" safety record and had been given 10 health and safety failings between 2014 and 2017 - the majority relating to unguarded machinery. WorkSafe's investigation found that the machine the worker was using was not adequately safeguarded.
