Hutt Valley High School sent a letter to parents informing them of the cyber attack on 25 February.

Principal Ross Sinclair said it was not clear yet what data has been accessed, but specialist teams were working to investigate.

One of the systems that is compromised holds family contact details, including names, addresses and students' records.

Sinclair said the school had turned off its internet and the IT network for now, to prevent further attacks.

"There's a degree of concern... but more frustration," Sinclair said.

"It puts us back in terms of what technology can be employed in the process of learning."
