Police are conducting a homicide inquiry after a five-year-old child died at Rotorua Hospital on Saturday night.

Police said in release they subsequently attended an address on Union Street. A post-mortem is underway.
A 24-year-old man has been charged with assaulting a child and appeared in the Rotorua District Court today, police said.
They said further charges were likely.
