A magnitude 5.5 earthquake off the coast of the Coromandel Peninsula has been felt by at least 1500 people tonight.
The quake at 8.18pm was centred 105km north-east of Whangamata at a depth of 309km.
Social media users, some as far away as Wellington, say they felt a light shaking.
