The police were told about 9pm that a man was on the roof of a Victoria Street building.

Power was turned off in the block around the building to protect residents, and vehicles were damaged by items thrown off the roof.

Over several hours, police negotiators tried to talk the 49-year-old man down.

Officers tried to distract him, and used a taser, before man was put into custody just after 1am.

A police dog was hurt during the incident, but his injuries weren't believed to be serious.

No shots were fired, police said.

The man was taken to hospital as a precaution and discharged to police custody.

He will face charges of assault, robbery, wilful damage and injuring a police dog when he appears in Hamilton District Court today.
