Police in Invercargill are warning people after a spate of burglaries and thefts from vehicles.
Detective Sergeant Tim Cook said a series of valuable items, some left in plain sight, have been taken over the past two weeks.
The vehicles targeted were parked up driveways, on street fronts and near walking tracks, he said.
Mr Cook said all property, including farm buildings, fuel tanks and vehicles should be locked and secure at night, or when left unattended.
People should also make sure their valuables can be traced by marking them or recording serial numbers, police said.
