Three twin-engine Bell 429 helicopters will replace three of the old fleet AS355 Squirrels.

Police commissioner Mike Bush said the helicopters have greater passenger capacity and fuel carriage.

"These Eagle helicopters have the capability to fly from Auckland to Wellington without needing to refuel," said Mr Bush.

He said the police Eagle crew attended more than 6000 incidents in Auckland and also further afield in the past 12 months.

The new helicopters would be located at the new Ōnehunga base.

Mr Bush said the move from having them based at Mechanics Bay in the Waitematā Harbour would have minimal impact on response times.
