Wanganui Mayor Michael Laws will meet the Minister of Conservation on Monday to try and resolve the ownership and future operation of the port of Wanganui.
Lawyers for the Wanganui District Council believe the Foreshore and Seabed Act inadvertently made the Crown a part-owner of the land under the port and some of the adjoining structures.
The council is also involved in a dispute with the lessee of the port, River City Port Limited, over its obligations.
Mr Laws says the long term aim of the council must be to take more direct control of the port's operation.
