The Outboard Boating Club of Auckland says it hopes to attract over 100 volunteers to help remove plastic and waste in Hobson Bay, and nearby Purewa Creek.

The club's commodore Bill Berry said the event was supported by Sea Cleaners, a not-for-profit organisation specialising in coastal clean-up.

"We want to make sure the marine environment which our 2000 members enjoy is kept at its best condition."

Local businesses would provide gift vouchers to those who collected the most rubbish or get the dirtiest, Mr Berry said.

People who want to take part can take their gardening gloves and old shoes and come to the club on Tamaki Drive at 9.30am on Sunday.

Mr Berry said the club has been involved in a number of environmental projects, including diverting 30 tonnes of fish bodies from landfill and into fertiliser since 2016.
