The pair sustained critical stab wounds during the big fight that started at the Grey Lynn Tavern on Great North Road, police said.

They were taken to hospital by friends, and have since had surgery and are in a stable condition.

The police are investigating the scene, and have closed Great North Road between Crummer Road and Williamson Avenue.

It is likely to stay closed for most of the morning.

The police are looking for any witnesses.
