Joseph Antonio Halaholo Larson was initially charged with causing grievous bodily harm, but that charge has now been upgraded.

Jerico Telea was critically injured early on the Saturday morning of Easter weekend, on Auckland's Queen St.

The 24-year-old died in hospital two days later.

Mr Larson appeared in the Auckland District Court today, and was granted bail on a 24-hour curfew.

Other bail conditions include not contacting any of Mr Telea's family or any witnesses.

More than a dozen of Mr Larson's family and friends were in court for the brief appearance.

The case will be moved to the High Court in Auckland.
